Dog Training and How Dog Trainers Can Help
Dog trainers and behavior specialists can assist
you in training your dog. Dog trainers often offer
classes in addition to one-on-one sessions. Classes
can range from puppy socialization or basic obedience
training, to challenges such as dog aggression or
general aggressive behavior; housetraining problems;
or excessive barking.
Training is necessary. It teaches pets what behaviors
are acceptable to their human families, and at the same
time teaches the human family how to safely manage their
pet's behavior.
For example, your dog may be running freely in an
off-leash area when a bike appears out of nowhere,
on a path towards your dog and at top speed. Yelling
"Stay!" will let your dog know to
stay put until you release him - allow the cyclist
to pass without colliding with your dog.
Recommendations are a good place to start when
choosing a dog trainer or pet behaviorist. Look for
someone who uses humane training methods and positive
reinforcement. Get references. Ask if you can observe
a class before signing up.
Group classes offer many benefits: you can watch
and learn from other people and how they interact with
their pets; your pet learns to listen to you even with
distractions; and your pet gets socialization and learns
to allow other people to handle him as well.
However, some dogs may require private sessions
with a dog trainer who specializes in certain behaviors
such as aggression. A consultation will help you to
determine what's right for your dog.
Dogs of all ages, sizes, and breeds can benefit from
training.
